Description

Yellowstone sits atop one of the largest active volcanic systems on Earth — a subsurface reservoir of heat, pressure, and fluid that has been monitored, studied, and cautiously lived alongside for 150 years. For engineers and geoscientists who spend their careers reasoning about what's happening underground in salt and rock they can't see directly, Yellowstone offers something rare: a chance to stand on top of a system where the subsurface behavior is visible at the surface, in real time. Obsidian Expeditions is offering SMRI Fall 2026 Conference attendees a private, small-group alternative to the standard Yellowstone field trip — additional capacity for those who want it, not a replacement for what SMRI has already arranged.

Itinerary

1
Private pickup and departure toward Yellowstone's West entrance. Breakfast provided en route.
2
The largest hot spring in the United States, and a clear surface expression of the reservoir beneath it.
3
Watch the eruption, then step inside the 1904 Inn — a structure retrofitted over decades for seismic and fire safety.
4
Lunch near the lake, inside the caldera itself, with time to see the 1891 Lake Hotel.
5
Wildlife viewing alongside active hydrothermal features including Mud Volcano and Sulphur Cauldron.
6
Overlooks of a canyon cut through hydrothermally altered rock — a visible geologic record of heat and fluid acting on stone over time.
7
Exact routing and stop order may vary based on road conditions, wildlife activity, and seasonal closures.

Why take this tour?

SMRI's members spend their careers asking a version of the same question: how do you understand, monitor, and safely manage a subsurface system you can't fully see — whether that's an evaporite formation being solution-mined for cavern storage or a hydrothermal reservoir beneath a national park.

Yellowstone doesn't answer that question the way a technical paper does. It answers it by putting the evidence in front of you: mineral terraces built by decades of fluid flow, a geyser basin whose eruption patterns reflect underground geometry no one can directly inspect, and 150 years of monitoring data on a system that is still, by geologic standards, not fully understood.

It's also a working example of infrastructure built to coexist with — rather than disturb — a sensitive subsurface system: boardwalks engineered to protect thermal features from the people who come to see them, roads and utilities routed to avoid disrupting active ground, and a long institutional history of learning, sometimes the hard way, how human activity can affect a geologic system that doesn't forgive mistakes.

Why This Experience, Specifically

SMRI has already arranged a full-day Yellowstone bus tour for Fall 2026 attendees, with a stated capacity of 35 guests. We're not competing with that — we're extending it.

Obsidian Expeditions is offering 28 additional seats across two private vehicles, running as a small-group alternative for attendees who weren't able to secure a spot on the official tour or who'd prefer a more personal, conversation-friendly pace with a guide who can go deeper into the geology.

  • Group size: capped at 28 guests, split across two vehicles
  • Format: private, guide-led, full-day
  • Relationship to the official tour: complementary — a second option, not a substitute
